SPECIAL TWO DAY CLAY WORKSHOP with guest artist JOHN CHEER

“Discover What Is Possible With Clay”Art Center Manatee, Florida

March 12-13, 2016,    9:00AM-5:00PM      LINK— (   http://artcentermanatee.org/shop/pottery-sculpture-classes/discover-what-is-possible-with-clay/  )

John Cheer, full-time clay artist whose distinctive work is in a class by itself, presents a trans-formative 2-day workshop for those interested in exploring design and techniques in both hand-building and wheel-throwing. The 1st day begins with John explaining why he creates and his philosophy and mental process involved in creating his uncommon ceramic works.

DAY 1

Techniques That Inspire:

A Hand-Building Workshop

Beginner – Intermediate

Approach clay differently! John will guide you in seeing the creative path as you discover and realize your own project. Explore hand-building, texture-making, movement and flow, as avenues to express creativity. John will also share his methods for constructing sculptural components of the face.

DAY 2

Techniques That Enable:

A Wheel-Throwing Workshop

Beginner – Intermediate

Have you ever tried to throw on the wheel and been quickly discouraged? In this workshop, John teaches his technique to center the clay in 3 seconds. That is correct. You will center the clay in 3 seconds, using a systematic, practical approach that will leave you confident even after the workshop ends. Are you already confident with centering? John takes you to the next level, learning techniques to throw bigger and better forms.

Comment from student — Myndi B Smithers

Hi John,
Thank you again for a truly transformative workshop. Your wheel throwing basics are genius. And making time for the 36 repetitions was so much more important than making a bunch of mediocre pots.

My favorite part of the workshop was how you connected the most basic elements of building and with avenues to expressing creativity. I thought I would be exhausted this morning but I find myself energetic and renewed. The positivity your teaching generates can not be underestimated.

From a critique point of view, I think if your course description improves it will jump start the enthusiasm for the workshop. I came in not knowing what to expect. I was happy to see that I was not in over my head. I don’t think this workshop would be good for students with no experience, but it is definitely geared toward beginners and intermediates. i think Deb’s description was really good. I hope she sends it to you.

I also think your lesson plans were super. Sometimes in the studio, when they are talking about workshops and the presenters, when you come up they don’t know how to describe what you do so the result is wishy washy. This is why I was unsure going in. At the League the talk up is almost more important than the write up in getting people to sign up. I , for sure, will emphasize the excellent organization and structure that I experienced in your class.

Comment from student- Jeffrey Stickle

For students of clay who have at least basic handbuilding and wheel skills, John Cheer brings you to the next level. He focuses on making larger pieces in both hand building and wheel throwing by introducing techniques that enable and inspire. Be ready to work- there is lots of practice! John emphasizes creativity and finding your personal path. Using solid foundational techniques he helps you begin the creative journey.

Some of the specific goals of the workshop include: How to “see”  the creative path in hand building, three-second centering, and how to raise thrown walls to make bigger pots.
